I am so honored to have my song “Washington Wasteland” recognized for the Songs 4 Social Change contest at Berklee College of Music this year. The was chosen to be performed at this year’s showcase, and was also chosen for Berklee’s Earthapalooza in honor of Earth Day.
I wrote this song about the summers I spent as a camp counselor at an overnight camp in Vashon Island, WA. The forest fires would get so bad in late August that parents would send the campers gas-masks so they could walk around outside. This song paints this picture in a dystopian way, although it is not actually dystopian at all.
